Burnt Toast Editorial

The #NoBullshit Publishing Consultancy

Dr Susan England 

My professional background is in publishing, editorial, historical research, and librarianship. It’s a long love affair with the written word that begun as a child.

In 2002, I gained a Ph.D in Anglo-Jewish history at the Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non-Jewish Relations, University of Southampton. I continue to research and write on my subject with two triple biographies in preparation for publication.

Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle, first edition, (Ward Lock), 1887.

I have worked in trade and academic publishing for Ward Lock (the original publisher of Arthur Conan Doyle and Mrs Beeton), Headline (as a member of their first sales team when launched in 1986; today the imprint is part of the giant publishing group Hachette Livre) and Gower (now part of Routledge) where I was UK Sales Manager and then European Sales Manager. I’ve also worked in bookselling for Dillons (later absorbed into Waterstones) and Blackwells.

In 2001, in the final year of my Doctorate, I set up Clio Publishing Ltd, an imprint helping non-fiction authors, academics, and researchers to self-publish in the arts and humanities, and which ran for 14 years. On one multi-book project I copy-edited and proofread close to 3 million words.

Some of my past clients include over 70 authors in the UK and overseas, and businesses, organisations and universties including National Justice Museum, Nottingham, SENSEWinchester School of Art (University of Southampton), Lord Rothschild (Windmill Hill Archives, Waddesdon Manor), Barrett Howe plc, AJEX (Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and women)British Sociological Association, Exbury Gardens, University of Hawaii, Bosworth Battlefields Survey (funded by Leicestershire County Council and the Heritage Lottery).

In  2017, I co-founded the Westbourne Book Binge in Bournemouth, Dorset launching its first festival in April 2018. I am also the official supporter of Show Me the Proof! – the Book Club with a difference which is run and hosted by independent bookseller Westbourne Bookshop

But it’s not all work and no play! It really isn’t.

Reading is a passion of course, especially history, biography, history of art and typography, poetry, and literary and crime fiction. I’m an avid reader of Private Eyelove browsing in secondhand bookshops, catching old films on TalkingPictures, watching crime drama on television, visiting art galleries and quirky museums, rummaging in archives, and listening to drama and documentaries on BBC Radio 4 and comedy on 4Extra.

I tweet about my research and personal stuff @The_OldLemon, more frequently and irreverently @SusanBurntToast and at @ShowMeTheProof1
